The RGF “Market Cycles” once again participated in the Tour de Cure, riding 180 kilometres from Chilliwack to Hope. It was a fantastic experience with two days of cycling, camaraderie, and laughter. The team consisted of Brett Simpson, Mark Neufeld, Jamil Chaudry, Bob Woodhouse, Don Mintz, and Brent Vandekerckhove. It was a great mix of some new and experienced riders.

Day one began in Cloverdale, and at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, we departed on our 110-kilometre journey through hot and humid conditions to Chilliwack. The route meandered along beautiful country roads and passed by endless farmland and extraordinary properties. After several rest stops for food, we arrived to a thunderous crowd and our cheerful supporters at the finish line.

Throughout the remainder of the day were numerous speeches and stories about families affected by cancer and their personal journey, and sharing of information about cutting-edge research that will be used to battle this deadly disease. We packed it in early Saturday night, settled into camp, and got some shuteye before an exciting and eventful day two.

We set out at 8 a.m. sharp on day two and got off to a torrid pace. The thick wildfire smoke had worsened by this point, and we wanted to make good time to Hope. After resting for lunch at the 70-kilometre mark, we received news that the event would be stopped due to smoke conditions. Although we were 30 kilometres from the finish line, most of the ride had been completed and we felt that we could say mission accomplished.

All-in-all the ride was great fun, with no mechanical malfunctions or injuries to any of our teammates. The food provided by BC Cancer was delicious, with plentiful goodies at rest stops along the way. Big thanks to the volunteers who gave up their Saturday to support us – you help make these events a grand success

Our RGF team, the Market Cycles, raised more than $80,000 for cancer research, and we are thankful for everyone who supported the cause. We’re also pleased to say that our team crossed the $1-million mark for total donations since the inception of the ride.

In total, the event raised more than $7.1 million, with more donations pouring in by the day. Brett Simpson and Mark Neufeld also completed their 15th consecutive ride, which is a significant milestone. The entire team of riders and volunteers at RGF is extremely thankful for the support we received from our family, friends, donors, and BC Cancer. We will continue to support the ride in the future.

We are looking forward to next year’s ride already! ■
