The B.C. government has announced changes to the Property Tax Deferment Program that will apply to property taxes deferred for 2026 and later (subject to approval by the Legislative Assembly and any necessary regulation changes).

What’s changing for 2026 and beyond

  • Interest on newly deferred property taxes will increase to Prime + 2%
  • Interest will be compounded monthly (previously, it was simple interest)

What’s not changing

  • Any property taxes deferred in 2025 or earlier will continue to be charged interest at the old rates and terms
  • These older balances are not retroactively affected by the new rules.

Important for automatic renewals:

  • If you are enrolled in automatic renewal, your 2026 property taxes will be deferred under the new interest rules unless you opt out. The province recommends opting out before June 1, 2026, if you do not want this to happen.

How to opt out of automatic renewal:

  • Submit a web message through your eTaxBC Property Tax Deferment account with the subject line: Opt Out – Auto Renewal, or
  • Call  1-888-355-2700

What this means for you

  • Your property tax for 2025 and prior years will remain at the old rates.
  • Property tax deferment will be more expensive going forward, and whether it still makes sense depends on your overall financial situation, cash flow, and borrowing alternatives.

Please note: These changes are subject to approval by the Legislative Assembly and any necessary regulation changes.
